A Fiat 500 Abarth drove past me yesterday afternoon under full exertion and the exhaust sound sounded more like a pencil sharpener than something fast.

Seriously, of all comparisons to make, a pencil sharpener? What the fuck kind of pencil sharpener sounds like that ?

TBH I don't think it sounds great. Maybe its because I know that it's just an unmuffled exhaust. Who knows if an unmuffled 4cl camry would sound good, just because its loud. There's one that parks on my block and I've heard the cold start and drive off a few times.

I would just sit at my desk, sharpening pencils all day. I’d be suffocated by sawdust and graphite by the end if the week.

I heard something start in this parking lot once. It sounded like an Italian V12, but lo and behold it was a little 500 abarth.

I haven't heard too many pencil sharpeners that sound like a 4-cylinder Maserati

An air-cooled Porsche sounds rough and agricultural. People love them too.

Fiat simply decided not to bother with engineering the NVH out of the engine and exhaust. Personally I enjoy hearing them.

At about 1:56, though this device is probably better built than a Fiat 500.

I was behind one on a ferry not long ago. Not impressed by that exhaust. It sounds like there’s something rattling around in there. Very tinny/rattly. It’s worse in person than in videos, too... I figured I’d get lynched if I said it, though.

Yeah, well, you can see how well my comment was received... I’ll just finish my work day and shamble out to my ‘97 Astro Van with the paint all falling off, though it does have posi-trac...

They really aren't similar. I'm just more impressed by the pencil sharpener.

Oh pfft. It’s a small car with a small engine, leave it alone. I bet it’s a hell of a lot more fun than a lot of cars that sound much better.

Fair enough. All I did was post an opinion. The response has been interesting.
